Raipur is gearing up for a big change in how it handles law and order. Starting November 1, the city will roll out the Police Commissioner System, a modern approach to urban policing in Chhattisgarh’s capital. This move by the state government promises quicker decisions and better safety for residents facing the challenges of a growing metro area.
Chhattisgarh DGP Arun Dev Gautam has kicked off the shift from the old policing setup to this new commissionerate model. To get it right, they’ve formed a seven-member team led by ADG Pradeep Gupta. The group is checking out how it works in big cities like Bhopal, Indore, Mumbai, and Delhi. Their report will shape a custom plan for Raipur, which they’ll send to the Home Department for the green light.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai first shared the exciting news during the 79th Independence Day event at Raipur’s Police Parade Ground. He highlighted how the Police Commissioner System will boost law enforcement and make streets safer for everyone.
This system is already up and running in many Indian cities. It gives top police officers more power under the Code of Criminal Procedure to tackle crimes, maintain public order, and handle emergencies on the spot. That means faster action, stronger accountability, and smarter ways to prevent crime.
Preparations in Raipur are almost done. Talks about this reform have been going on for years, but they picked up speed after CM Sai’s government took charge. Sources say the system could soon expand to other busy Chhattisgarh cities like Bilaspur and Durg, where urban policing needs are just as pressing.
Under the new setup, the Police Commissioner will take full charge of law and order, including powers that District Collectors currently hold. The Collector will focus more on revenue and civil duties. To keep rural areas covered, the government plans to appoint a dedicated Superintendent of Police (SP Rural), balancing urban and countryside needs effectively.
This step fits into a nationwide push to give police leaders more control in bustling cities. By combining admin and judicial roles in the police, it cuts red tape and ramps up efficiency. If Raipur pulls it off, it could inspire similar changes across Chhattisgarh, making policing stronger statewide.
