West Indies Announces Squad for Test Tour to India: Big Changes as Brathwaite Gets Dropped
Cricket fans, get ready for some exciting action! The West Indies team has unveiled its 15-member squad for the upcoming two-Test series against India. The matches kick off on October 2 in Ahmedabad and wrap up on October 14 in Delhi. In a major shake-up, former captain Kraigg Brathwaite finds himself out of the West Indies Test squad for India tour.
The Cricket West Indies (CWI) selectors made bold moves to build a batting lineup that can tackle spin bowling head-on in Indian conditions. They’ve brought back opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul and middle-order batter Alick Athanaze to strengthen the top order. Brathwaite, a veteran with 100 Test matches under his belt, lost his spot after sitting out the third Test against Australia at home. Joining him on the sidelines are Keacy Carty, Johann Layne, and Mikyle Louis.
Adding some spin firepower, uncapped left-arm spinner Khary Pierre earns his first call-up. Pierre impressed everyone by grabbing 41 wickets at an average of just 13.56 in the West Indies Championship. He’ll team up with vice-captain Jomel Warrican and captain Roston Chase to form a strong spin attack.
Head coach Daren Sammy is pumped about the squad. "Playing in the subcontinent is always tough, but we’ve picked a team ready to compete in these conditions," Sammy said in a CWI statement. "This is our second series together as a Test unit, and we’ve already shown our potential when we stick to our plans."
He highlighted the returns: "Tagenarine Chanderpaul is back to fix our opening woes after recent struggles. Alick Athanaze joins for his solid skills against spin. And Khary Pierre steps in as our second spinner for what should be turning pitches."
Athanaze’s last Test was during the West Indies tour of Pakistan in January this year. Chanderpaul, who last played in 2024, might open alongside John Campbell. The batting looks solid with Kevlon Anderson (averaging 42.05) holding his place, plus captain Roston Chase, Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach, and Brandon King.
The spin trio of Warrican, Pierre, and Chase will lead the bowling, backed by pacers Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Anderson Phillip, and Jayden Seales. The West Indies Test team for India will leave on September 22 and land in Ahmedabad on September 24.
