Mohammed Shami Opens Up on Dark Thoughts and Cricket’s Lifeline
Indian cricket star Mohammed Shami recently shared a deeply personal story that highlights his battle with tough times. In a candid chat on Aap Ki Adalat with host Rajat Sharma, the right-arm pacer revealed he once thought about suicide but quickly pushed the idea away. Why? Because cricket has given him so much—fame, love from fans, and a purpose.
"Socha zaroor, par hua nahin," Shami said, explaining how the dark thought crossed his mind during a low point in life. He added, "Yeh shukr hai, varna World Cup miss ho jata mere se." In simple terms, he realized ending it all would mean throwing away everything the game offered. Instead of jumping into despair, memories of the affection from cricket fans pulled him back. "Chalo, isko chhodo, game mein lagte hain phir," he decided, choosing to focus on his passion.
This revelation comes amid ongoing personal struggles. Shami’s marriage to former model Hasin Jahan, which started in 2014, hit rough waters. The couple welcomed a daughter in 2015, but they separated in 2018 after Jahan accused Shami of domestic violence. She filed a case in Alipore court, alleging harassment by Shami and his family, and demanded Rs 7 lakh monthly maintenance.
Fast forward to July this year: The Calcutta High Court stepped in, ordering Shami to pay Rs 4 lakh per month in alimony. Out of this, Hasin Jahan gets Rs 1.5 lakh, while their daughter receives Rs 2.5 lakh. It’s been a long, emotional fight for the family.
Shami didn’t hold back on the social media backlash either. After the domestic violence allegations in 2018, trolls flooded him with abuse. "Bad things are spoken about, but nowadays people say stuff that doesn’t even exist," he shared. He even joked that the number of accusations against him over the last 6-7 years is more than what some terrorists face. "I am most scared of that," Shami admitted, sounding helpless against the online storm. He recalled staring at an old photo, wondering how so many false claims piled up. "I cannot do anything in this."
On the cricket front, Shami’s been working hard to bounce back. His last competitive match was on May 2 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Gujarat Titans. It wasn’t his best day—he bowled three overs, gave away 48 runs, and didn’t take a wicket. Overall, the IPL season was tough; he picked just six wickets in nine games.
Shami has been out of the national team spotlight lately. He missed India’s high-profile Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series in England earlier this year and wasn’t selected for the Asia Cup in September. His last international outing was the ICC Champions Trophy in March, where he shone as India’s joint-top wicket-taker with nine scalps in five matches. Teaming up with spinner Varun Chakravarthy, Shami led the pace attack in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence and helped India win the title by beating New Zealand in the final. His last Test match was back in 2023 against Australia in England.
Fans are eager to see Shami return to form. Will he make the cut for the upcoming home series against West Indies or the white-ball games against Australia? As one of India’s key pacers, his story of resilience could inspire many facing their own battles. Shami’s journey shows how cricket isn’t just a game—it’s a lifeline for stars like him.
