Welfare schemes failed to reach poor people prior to BJP’s rule: Assam CM

Guwahati, Dec 1 (LatestNewsX) – Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to a government programme in Hojai district on Monday to call the opposition “absurd” and claim that prior to the BJP’s rule, state‑run welfare schemes had failed to reach those in need.

Speaking at the event, Sarma said that under the previous administration the state’s development pace had stalled and people on low incomes were not getting the benefits of welfare schemes. “Under the BJP government in Assam, schemes such as Orunodoi, Mukhyamantrir Mahila Udyomita Abhiyan, Nijut Moina, Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Jan Arogya Yojana, along with the subsidised distribution of pulses, sugar and salt through ration cards have brought substantial relief to both the poor and the middle class,” the chief minister added.

He also stressed that the government is putting effort into infrastructure improvement. “Earlier, schools received only nominal funds for development,” he noted, “but today we are laying foundation stones for new schools that will each cost between Rs. 6 and 8 crore.”

Sarma officially opened a newly built railway overbridge at Jamunamukh in Hojai district. The bridge, built for roughly Rs. 83 crore, stretches 951 metres and features a 7.5‑metre‑wide motorable carriageway.

During the visit, the CM also virtually inaugurated the Model High School at Balijuri Tea Estate and the Jagannath Community Halls and Skill Centres at Kandali, Dhantola and Sagunbahi Tea Estates. He laid foundation stones for new school buildings at Barhampur Higher Secondary School and Jamunamukh Higher Secondary School, and announced several flood‑control and road‑connectivity projects under the Nagaon Water Resources Division.

These include works along the right bank of the Kopili river from Jamunamukh–Chikamari to Milonpur and from Jamunamukh to Patiapam, as well as on the left bank from Bakulguri to the Jamunamukh RCC bridge, Jamunamukh bridge to Premjan–Gosaigaon, Gosaigaon to Chaibuk village, and Pub‑Kawoimari to Borchung. Additional anti‑erosion works have begun on the Haria river from Palsa to Pub Tetelisara.

The chief minister spoke to a public meeting in the Barhampur Legislative Assembly Constituency, describing the day as a milestone for the area. “The new overbridge will provide smooth connectivity between Dabaka, Kampur and Jamunamukh railway stations,” he said.

He acknowledged the persistent flood threat in Kampur and Jamunamukh, noting that the Water Resources Department has launched projects worth around Rs. 80 crore to reduce flooding in Barhampur and Jamunamukh. Once finished, the embankments will offer long‑term protection for residents.

Sarma highlighted the rapid progress of development works in Barhampur, including the recently inaugurated flyovers at Chaparmukh and Kampur. He also cited road‑construction and stadium projects that together amount to about Rs. 350 crore, which are underway across the constituency.
