8 dead and dozens wounded in Russian strike on Ukraine’s Odesa port

Late on Friday, a Russian missile strike hit the port infrastructure in Odesa, southern Ukraine, and Ukrainian emergency services reported that eight people were killed and 27 wounded.

Some of those injured were on a bus that had been caught in the blast site, the agency said in a Telegram post over the weekend. Trucks in the parking lot erupted in flame and cars were also damaged.

Oleh Kiper, the head of the Odesa region, confirmed that the attack involved ballistic missiles. Moscow initially did not comment on the reports, but the Russian Defence Ministry released a statement on Saturday morning saying that during the previous day it had targeted “transport and storage infrastructure used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” as well as energy installations supplying Kyiv’s war effort.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones struck several Russian targets. The General Staff announced that a Russian patrol ship, the “Okhotnik,” had been hit during a nighttime raid while it was operating near an oil and gas platform in the Caspian Sea.

Damage assessment was ongoing. Another strike hit a drilling platform in the Filanovsky oil and gas field, operated by Russian company Lukoil. The company has not yet issued a statement.

Drone attacks also impacted a radar system in the Krasnosilske area of Crimea, a region Russia annexed in 2014. Lukoil, one of two Russian oil majors now subject to U.S. sanctions aimed at cutting Moscow’s export revenue, has not responded.

Kyiv has cited similar justifications for continued long‑range strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, arguing that the revenues from these assets help fund and perpetuate the war, which is now into its fifth year.
