CBI arrests cyber crook targeting Japanese citizens

A cyber‑fraudster who duped Japanese citizens is now in police custody after a sting operation that spanned several Indian states and the United Arab Emirates.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced that Dwibendu Moharana was seized at Bhubaneswar Airport on November 1. The arrest came after he fled India on May 29, following the discovery of his illegal call‑centre in Noida that pretended to be tech support from major firms.
The U‑shaped scheme used sophisticated social engineering to trick Japanese victims into wiring money to “support” accounts. Local investigators say the centre, operated through Voip Connect Pvt. Limited, was a front for a larger trans‑national gang.
CBI operations began with a sweep on May 28 that seized six suspects across Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. After Moharana jumped to the UAE, the Indian authorities boarded him back on a flight and handed him over for questioning on October 30. He was arraigned before a Special CBI Court and remanded for three days of interrogation.
So far, seven people have been booked in the case, all of whom have charge‑sheets filed and are kept in legal custody. The probe was carried out with tight coordination from Japan’s National Police Agency and Microsoft Corporation, cutting into the gang’s global reach.
In a statement, the CBI highlighted Operation Chakra V, a nationwide effort that knocked out roughly 40 people linked to the so‑called “digital arrest” fraud. The agency reinforced its commitment to dismantling cyber‑money‑laundering networks and protecting citizens from online scams.
