Towering figure of Indian cinema: Prez Murmu expresses grief over Dharmendra’s demise

In New Delhi, President Droupadi Murmu expressed her heartfelt sorrow on Monday following the death of veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, describing him as a “towering figure of Indian cinema.”

Dharmendra, who was 89, passed away this morning after a battle with illness. He had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai earlier in the week, and after showing signs of recovery, he was released from the hospital.

Through a post on X, President Murmu added, “The demise of veteran actor and former Member of Parliament Shri Dharmendra Ji is a great loss to Indian cinema. One of the most popular actors, he delivered numerous memorable performances during his decades‑long illustrious career.”

She followed with, “As a towering figure of Indian cinema, he leaves behind a legacy which will continue to inspire young generations of artists. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and admirers,”

Dharmendra had been placed on a ventilator due to breathing difficulties. He had been living at a farmhouse in Khandala with his first wife, Prakash Kaur, after moving from the city to escape its worsening pollution. His death adds to a recent string of losses in Hindi cinema, with fellow actors Pankaj Dheer, Asrani, Satish Shah, and advertising icon Piyush Pandey having passed away the previous month.

Recognized as one of Bollywood’s most enduring and beloved stars, Dharmendra began his career after winning a nationwide talent hunt in 1958 organized by Filmfare magazine and Bimal Roy Productions. The competition, launched in the late 1950s to discover fresh faces for Hindi cinema, selected him for his striking appearance and natural charisma—a launchpad that later brought stars such as Rajesh Khanna into the spotlight.

His charm, emotional depth and effortless screen presence propelled him to quick fame across romance, action and comedy. Iconic films like “Phool Aur Patthar,” which established him as a leading man, and “Sholay,” where his portrayal of the lovable, quick‑wit Veeru became legendary, remain highlights of his career.

In recognition of his cinematic contributions, Dharmendra was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third‑highest civilian award.
