The Congress party’s top leader, Mallikarjun Kharge, convened a big strategy meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday. The goal was to review how the party is handling the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Review (SIR) that is underway in several states and union territories.
Senior Congress officials – general secretaries, in‑charge officers, party‑state committees, and local leaders – gathered at the party headquarters. They discussed the SIR, which checks the accuracy of electoral rolls and can remove duplicate or fake voters.
On X, Kharge posted a firm message. “The Congress Party is 100 % committed to keeping the electoral rolls clean and fair,” he wrote. “The public’s trust in our democracy is already fragile, and the ECI’s current handling of the SIR is frankly disappointing.”
He accused the ruling BJP of trying to use the SIR as a political weapon. “The Election Commission must prove it is not acting as a shadow of the BJP,” Kharge said. “It has to remember its constitutional oath to the people, not to any ruling party.”
Kharge warned that if the ECI turns a blind eye, it would be a breach of duty and a silent approval of the BJP’s plans. He announced that Congress workers, booth officials, district, city, and block presidents would stay “relentlessly vigilant.” The party will investigate any attempts to delete real voters or add bogus names. “We will not let our democratic safeguards be eroded by partisan misuse,” he added.
The meeting comes after the Congress suffered a heavy defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections, winning only six seats. Party leaders and supporters now face pressure from both within the party and across the country to respond to the SIR concerns and the recent electoral setback.
