The United Kingdom’s Conservative Party leader, Bob Blackman, has called on Bangladesh’s interim government to hold elections that are free, fair and inclusive. Blackman urged the government led by economist‑turned‑politician Muhammad Yunus to make sure every citizen, especially minorities, can participate in the country’s political life.
In a statement shared on social media, Blackman said democracy depends on elections that reflect people’s true will. He noted that while the Yunus administration promised a return to the rule of law, real progress on democratic reform has been slow.
The MP highlighted the plight of minorities who suffered after last year’s July protests. “We need a special effort to give them equal standing and to keep them safe,” he added. Blackman also urged that people of all political backgrounds be able to contribute to rebuilding Bangladesh.
Earlier this month, a group of British lawmakers, including Blackman, warned that Bangladesh’s human‑rights situation has worsened. They called on the UK government, the United Nations and the wider international community to push for a clear, time‑bound path to peaceful elections and stable civilian governance. The goal, said the lawmakers, is to restore trust, accountability and a just society in Bangladesh.
