Assam Congress Slams PM Modi’s Manipur Visit as ‘Too Little, Too Late’
In a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Assam Congress unit called his recent visit to Manipur a delayed response to the state’s ongoing ethnic violence. The party pointed out that the unrest has raged for over two-and-a-half years, yet Modi only stepped in now.
Senior Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi raised the issue during a press conference in Guwahati. He accused the Prime Minister of ignoring Manipur while focusing on foreign trips. "Manipur has been burning for more than two-and-a-half years. In that time, the PM visited 39 countries—some multiple times. But he couldn’t spare a moment for Manipur until today," Bordoloi said.
The Congress labeled the visit "too little, too late." They argued that the crisis exploded in May 2023 with communal clashes between ethnic groups, and the top leadership should have acted right away. Party leaders recalled how they repeatedly urged Modi to visit during the peak of the violence, but their calls fell on deaf ears.
The criticism didn’t stop there. The Opposition party also hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for spreading misinformation during Modi’s Northeast tour. Bordoloi specifically called out remarks against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He claimed the PM twisted facts about Gandhi’s stance during Operation Sindoor. "The facts show Rahul Gandhi has always backed our armed forces. Saying anything else is just twisting the truth," Bordoloi added firmly.
The Congress went further, questioning the BJP’s habit of dragging in India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, for political jabs. Bordoloi urged the BJP to check their history before making such claims in public.
Assam Assembly Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia joined in, highlighting what he saw as flip-flops in the BJP’s messaging. He brought up the recent Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika birth centenary celebrations. "Hazarika’s songs spread harmony and unity across the Northeast. But the BJP’s divisive words go against everything he stood for," Saikia noted.
Through these points, the Assam Congress painted the BJP’s handling of the Manipur crisis and Northeast issues as reactive and driven by politics, not real care for the people affected by the ethnic unrest.
