Hyderabad, Dec. 28 — The Telangana Legislative Assembly is set to convene on Monday, and insiders predict a heated stand‑off as lawmakers clash over irrigation plans and the allocation of river waters.
The opposition Bharath Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is positioning itself to pressure the ruling Congress government on two key fronts: the unfinished Palamuru‑Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project and the broader sharing of Godavari and Krishna river waters. The ruling party, meanwhile, is bracing for a counter‑offensive.
BRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), who has been quiet for months, declared that he would launch a mass movement to protest the Congress government’s “failure” to complete the Palamuru‑Rangareddy project. In a public appearance, KCR accused the government of neglecting Telangana’s interests and criticized both Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for “betraying” the state’s interests. He also alleged that the Congress administration had undermined Telangana’s rightful share of Krishna‑river water in the Palamuru‑Rangareddy project.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy fired back, accusing KCR of causing injustice in Telangana’s river‑water settlements over the past decade under the BRS regime. Reddy argued that Telangana’s rights had been handed over to Andhra Pradesh by KCR during the BRS rule. He challenged the opposition leader to attend the assembly session and participate in the debate on irrigation and water‑sharing disputes, repeatedly rebuking KCR for staying away from assembly meetings. “Why is KCR running away from the Assembly?” Reddy questioned.
KCR, who sits as the Leader of Opposition, briefly joined assembly proceedings in July 2024 and March 2025, but has not taken part in any debates. He is expected to be present on Monday’s seventh session, which will pause for a three‑day New Year recess and resume on January 2.
Other hot topics on the agenda include the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project and the contentious phone‑tapping and Formula E car‑race cases. The Congress government has decided to hand over alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram scheme to the CBI, while accusing the central BJP‑led government of delaying the investigation. A fresh Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar, has been established to probe the phone‑tapping allegations, with former Special Intelligence Bureau chief Prabhakar Rao as the prime accused. The SIT is reportedly planning to summon KCR, his son K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) and nephew T. Harish Rao, both former ministers, in the probe.
There are reports that the former BRS government had set up a SIB unit to tap phones of opposition leaders, internal dissenters, officials, journalists, celebrities and even judges. In the Formula E race case, Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has allowed the Anti‑Corruption Bureau to prosecute KTR.
The session promises to be a battleground for the state’s key water and governance issues, with both parties sharpening their arguments as the national elections loom.
