Mammootty hails Kerala’s social progress amid CM Vijayan’s ‘extreme poverty-free’ declaration

Mammootty, the legendary Malayalam actor, stepped into the spotlight after eight long months for Kerala’s announcement that it has become “extreme poverty‑free.” The star‑filled ceremony kicked off Saturday night at Thiruvananthapuram’s Central Stadium, drawing cheers from locals who have long celebrated their state’s social achievements.

During the event, Mammootty told the crowd that Kerala’s social progress “baffles the world.” He said the state’s success comes from “democratic ideals” and the people’s steady devotion to social values. “Development never truly begins until hunger disappears,” he added. “In Kerala the lack of starvation is a foundation for everything else.” His speech set an emotional tone, earning a roaring applause.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan joined Mammootty to describe the poverty‑free milestone as the “dawn of a new Kerala” and a “stepping stone to the state’s renaissance.” He told reporters that the achievement comes from collective resolve and sustained government action. Vijayan said the government’s left‑led team turned promises into reality, delivering more than 4.7 lakh houses and food, shelter and health care to over 64,000 families across the state. “We have melted away extreme poverty,” he explained. “Now a new chapter opens in Kerala’s history, and we stand proudly before the world.”

The Chief Minister urged the public to keep the momentum going, warning that the journey toward a “New Kerala” is far from finished. He said the government will keep building on inclusivity and social justice.

The ceremony also drew big names from the film world, including Mohanlal and Kamal Haasan. However, the two stars did not turn up. Earlier that day, Congress‑led opposition lawmakers had stayed in the Assembly, calling the debt‑free declaration a “sham.” The opposition’s absence left the event predominantly a showcase for leaders and citizens alike.

For voters and observers, the event underlined Kerala’s reputation for high social indicators. From on‑ramp health programs to a strong focus on education, the state has long set a benchmark for other Indian states. The declaration that extreme poverty has been wiped out reflects years of welfare schemes, food security plans and inclusive housing projects. It is a striking example of how a democratic, people‑driven agenda can bring measurable results.

In short, through the support of its citizens and a government that has turned pledges into action, Kerala has proven that ending extreme poverty is possible. With 4.7 lakh houses built, 64,000 families secured, and continued progress on social justice, the state’s model may inspire future reforms across India and beyond.
