Punjab Police scored a big win against cross-border crime on Thursday, busting a smuggling ring tied to Pakistan. Officers arrested five suspects, including a teenager, and seized 12 high-tech .30 bore pistols along with 1.5 kilograms of heroin.
The arrests targeted Joban Singh, 22; Karandeep Singh, 19; and Ajaypal Singh, 18, all from Mari Megha village in Tarn Taran district. They also nabbed Jashanpreet Singh, 18, from Rania village in Amritsar, plus a 16-year-old juvenile.
DGP Gaurav Yadav shared that early probes show Joban Singh and Jashanpreet Singh linked up directly with smugglers in Pakistan. They used social media to coordinate drops of arms and drugs. Those weapons aimed to stir up gang fights across Punjab, he added.
The operation kicked off at a checkpoint in Amritsar’s Hakima area. Police grabbed Joban, Karandeep, and Ajaypal there, pulling five .30 bore pistols from them. Their village sits right near the international border, where Pakistan smugglers rely on drones to sneak in the goods.
Digging deeper from Joban’s tips, officers then caught Jashanpreet and the juvenile with seven more pistols. Joban also spilled details on a hidden stash, leading to the recovery of that 1.5 kg of heroin.
A case from September 28 now runs under the Arms Act and NDPS Act at Amritsar’s Gate Hakima police station. Investigators keep pushing to uncover the full network behind this arms and narcotics smuggling operation.
