Woman stabbed in NYC Macy’s bathroom while changing baby was going off ‘mom’s instinct’ in fighting off homeless attacker
A California mom was in the bathroom of Macy’s Herald Square changing her baby when a deranged attacker swore in. A close family friend told The Post that the woman’s reaction was “a mom’s instinct.”
“I’m not surprised she did that,” Justine Silva, a high‑school girls’ soccer coach who knows the family through her boyfriend, said. “She works out. She’s pretty fit,” Silva added, noting that the brave mother was stabbed in the back, shoulder and arm during the Thursday incident.
The family had planned to head back to California the next day, but “they just had the baby not too long ago and they were just trying to get [away] on holiday. This is their first trip to New York since they had the baby,” Silva explained. Now they remain stuck in the Big Apple with no confirmed return date.
The attacker, Kerri Aherne, 43, had been released from a psychiatric facility earlier that morning and has since faced charges of attempted murder, assault, child endangerment and weapons possession.
