Akshay Sharma Stuns with 9-Under 63 on Day 1 of Chennai Open 2025
Chandigarh’s Akshay Sharma grabbed the spotlight on the first day of the Chennai Open 2025, firing an incredible nine-under 63 at the Cosmo TNGF Golf Course. This INR 1 crore Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) event kicked off in Chennai on Tuesday, and Akshay’s flawless round put him three shots ahead of the pack.
The 35-year-old, a two-time PGTI winner, nailed seven birdies and capped it with a stunning eagle on the 18th hole. His hot start included birdies on the first four holes, where his irons and wedges shone, landing shots within five feet three times. Akshay kept the momentum going with three more birdies up to the 14th, including a massive 36-footer on the ninth and a pinpoint approach on 14. That epic 42-foot eagle putt on the final hole sealed a round to remember.
Rain pushed back the start by an hour, so play began at 8 am. But fading light forced suspension at 6:10 pm, leaving 24 out of 126 players to finish their first round Wednesday morning at 7 am.
Akshay shared his excitement after the round: "I hit so many great shots and putts today. That early birdie run gave me real momentum. After last night’s rain, I focused on adapting to the wet conditions—keeping the ball in play and steering clear of the rough." He added, "Everything clicked perfectly, with just one bad shot. My season hasn’t been amazing, but a top-10 finish in my last event boosted my confidence big time."
Delhi’s Arjun Prasad, who’s second on the current PGTI Order of Merit, carded a solid six-under 66 to tie for second place. Gurugram’s Manu Gandas matched him with the same score. Manu also birdied the first four holes, then added three more on the back nine with just one bogey. Arjun mixed seven birdies and a bogey for his strong showing.
