Jaipur, Oct 8 – Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been held in Jodhpur Central Jail for the past eleven days, received his first visit from his wife, Geetanjali, on Tuesday. The couple were joined by the lawyer Ritam Khare.
Geetanjali posted the update on X (formerly Twitter) where she wrote: “Met @Wangchuk66 today with @RitamKhare and got the detention order which we will challenge. His spirit is undaunted. His commitment resolute! His resilience intact! He conveys heartfelt thanks to all for their support and solidarity. #SatyamevaJayate #FreeSonamWangchuk.” She confirmed that Wangchuk remains strong and is still fighting for Ladakh’s rights, thanking supporters across India.
Wangchuk was arrested on Sept 24 under the National Security Act after violent protests in Ladakh that left four people dead and almost twenty injured. During the clashes, a BJP office was torched and several police officers were hurt. The Ladakh administration says he incited violence, encouraged self‑immolation, and faced financial irregularities.
Before Geetanjali’s visit, Wangchuk’s brother, Tsetan Dorjay, and Mustafa Haji, the Leone Apex Body’s legal adviser, also met him in jail.
The Supreme Court has sent a notice to the central government and Ladakh authorities, questioning why Wangchuk remains detained. The court asked why he hasn’t been released immediately. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Geetanjali, asked the court to share the arrest order with Wangchuk’s family and to allow a jail visit. The court said the matter would only be heard if the family’s request to meet was denied.
The climate and human‑rights champion’s arrest has sparked a national debate. The next hearing is set for Oct 14, while authorities insist tough action is needed against those tied to the violence. Wangchuk’s supporters continue to rally for his release and for the protection of Ladakh’s indigenous rights.
