ACL Two: Mohun Bagan Super Giant aim for winning start against Ahal FK

Kolkata’s Mohun Bagan Super Giant is gearing up for an exciting start to their AFC Champions League Two campaign. On Tuesday, the Indian giants will take on Turkmenistan’s Ahal FK at the packed Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan stadium. This marks their second straight season in Asia’s second-tier club competition, thanks to their strong defense of the ISL Shield last year.
The Mariners dominated the Indian Super League with a whopping 56 points from 24 matches, finishing eight points ahead of runners-up FC Goa. That impressive run earned them a direct spot in ACL Two. Their recent Durand Cup journey ended on a sour note with a 2-1 loss to rivals East Bengal FC in the quarter-finals, but the team has bounced back with fresh talent. Brazilian striker Robson Robinho and defender Mehtab Singh have joined forces with full-back Tekcham Abhishek Singh and returning winger Kiyan Nassiri. This boosts an already powerhouse squad, setting Mohun Bagan up for a solid push in Asian football and a deeper run this time around.
Facing them first is Ahal FK, a tough and consistent team from Turkmenistan’s Yokary Liga. They clinched their group stage spot by beating Tajikistan’s Regar-TadAZ Tursunzoda 2-1 in the playoffs and currently hold second place in their home league. With their gritty style and direct play, Ahal FK could give Mohun Bagan a real challenge in this Group C opener.
Football legend Bhaichung Bhutia is optimistic about Mohun Bagan’s AFC Champions League Two debut. “I think we have big hopes for Mohun Bagan,” he said. “They’ve been one of the most consistent teams in the ISL, and I hope they’ll take Indian football to a strong level in Asian competitions this year. We expect them to shine.”
