New Delhi, Oct 26 – The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stepped in after a local news story exposed protests in Dommadugu village over suspected dumping of pharmaceutical waste into Nalla Cheruvu, a water body in Telangana’s Sangareddy district.
The tribunal, led by Justice Prakash Shrivastava and joined by Expert Member A. Senthil Vel, said the case raises serious questions under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974 and the Environment (Protection) Act 1986.
According to a report dated September 24, residents and environmental activists claim that nearby pharmaceutical firms are discharging toxic effluents into the lake, creating health risks and ecological damage. The villagers demanded urgent action from the authorities.
NGT has named the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TELPCB), and the Sangareddy District Collector as respondents. The TELPCB lawyer has accepted the notice and asked for four weeks to prepare a reply.
Because the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Southern Zonal Bench, the tribunal ordered the case to be transferred to Chennai. All respondents must file their affidavits and responses at least a week before the next hearing, slated for December 3. The tribunal added that any reply submitted directly without an advocate will still be considered, ensuring the respondents remain “virtually present” to assist.
The NGT’s intervention is expected to clarify compliance with water‑pollution laws and to drive enforcement against the companies accused of harming the local water supply.
