Keralan police have taken swift action after a viral clip showed a Mumbai tourist being harassed by local taxi drivers in Munnar.
The video, posted by assistant professor Jan Wani J., captured the confrontation when the traveler and her friends tried to book an online cab instead of hiring a local taxi near the KSRTC bus stand on Oct. 30. The two drivers, Vinayakan and Vijayakumar, allegedly warned them that they could only travel if they used local taxis.
The clip caused a stir on social media, with thousands of people condemning the drivers and calling for tighter security for tourists in the hill station. After the outcry, the Munnar police registered a suo motu case for wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation. Two drivers have already been taken into custody, and a third, who was identified by the police, is expected to be booked soon.
State Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas called the incident “unfortunate” and pledged to boost police vigilance so tourists would never face such harassment again. The incident highlights an ongoing tension between traditional taxi unions and app‑based ride services in Kerala, and the state is under pressure to find a safer, more welcoming solution for visitors to its popular mountain resorts.
