A shocking building collapse in Indore’s busy Vijay Nagar area left 14 people injured on Monday evening, sparking fears over city safety standards. The incident hit a commercial multi-storey structure during normal business hours, sending residents and shoppers scrambling as part of the building suddenly crumbled.
Indore Police Commissioner Santosh Kumar shared that rescue teams first pulled out 10 trapped individuals and rushed them to a nearby hospital. “Rescue operations are going on as two more persons remain trapped,” he said at the time. Eyewitnesses heard a loud crack before dust and debris filled the air.
“It was terrifying. People were screaming and running for safety. Some were trapped under rubble,” local shopkeeper Ramesh Patel told reporters.
Emergency crews from the Indore Municipal Corporation, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police arrived fast. They used sniffer dogs and thermal cameras to search for survivors deep into the night. Three people suffered serious injuries, while 11 others had minor to moderate ones. Doctors at MY Hospital treated everyone, with three still in the ICU—but officials say all are now stable.
Early probes point to unauthorized changes or neglected upkeep as possible causes of the Indore building collapse. The Public Works Department (PWD) and Indore Development Authority (IDA) kicked off a full structural audit of the site and nearby buildings.
Indore Collector Ashish Singh announced, “A full inquiry has been ordered, and action will be taken against those responsible.” As a safety move, authorities sealed the collapsed building and cleared out adjacent ones.
This Vijay Nagar Indore tragedy has reignited calls for tougher building code enforcement in fast-growing cities like Indore. Civic groups and locals want more regular checks to avoid future structural failures. City officials encourage residents to report any signs of building problems right away.
