Russia calls US sanctions against oil companies ‘counterproductive’

Russia’s foreign ministry blasted U.S. sanctions on two major Russian oil firms this week, calling the move “counterproductive.” Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the ministry, said Moscow sees no major problems from the restrictions and that the country has strong immunity against Western sanctions.

The sanctions were issued by the U.S. Treasury Department and target Rosneft, Lukoil, and their subsidiaries. They form part of President Donald Trump’s new strategy to pressure Russia into ending the war in Ukraine. Trump warned that further actions could loom on the horizon.

Zakharova told reporters that Russia remains willing to keep talking to Washington. She said the dialogue is intended to outline “the parameters of the Russia‑U.S. talks on bilateral relations and the next steps in the Ukrainian settlement process.” The ministry said it is ready to continue contacts with the U.S. State Department through the process that President Vladimir Putin and President Trump are trying to bring forward.

During a meeting with NATO Secretary‑General Mark Rutte at the White House, Trump expressed hope that the war would soon be resolved. He described the sanctions on Lukoil and Rosneft as “tremendous” and urged that they “not last long.” Trump also said his talks with Putin had yet to yield results.

Trump cancelled a planned meeting with Putin in Budapest, saying it didn’t feel productive. He said the meeting would be rescheduled in the future once both sides are ready to make progress.
