Himachal Guv bats for coordinated, determined efforts to combat drug abuse

On December 7th in Shimla, the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shiv Pratap Shukla, opened a state‑wide forum titled “War on Drugs – Chitte Par Chot,” a drive spearheaded by the NGO Sanjeevani. He called for a united, resolute push to curb drug abuse.

Speaking to the crowd, Shukla stressed that tackling drugs requires both firm police measures and a compassionate stance toward those affected. He highlighted the need for religious bodies to join NGOs in dismantling drug networks funded by overseas actors.

The Governor praised the state government’s battle against the drug scourge and singled out the rare moment when both the ruling and opposition parties rallied together on the issue in the Assembly. “Without collective political resolve, it would not be possible to save the Dev Bhoomi from this crisis,” he noted.

Acknowledging the initiative, Shukla described “Chitte Par Chot” not merely as a public‑relations push but a sincere pledge. He expressed satisfaction that Sanjeevani focuses on more than awareness; it also pushes for policy reform, capacity building, research, grassroots outreach, and community‑based help.

The Governor added that the organisation offers a platform where multiple NGOs can collaborate with the government to strengthen prevention, counselling, rehabilitation, training and ground‑level outreach. “Organised efforts, planned strategies and community participation are essential if ‘Chitte Par Chot’ is to truly succeed,” he said.

He argued that real change only comes when society, media, religious groups, sports bodies, volunteer networks and youth clubs raise a collective voice. According to the Governor, protecting Himachal from drugs demands vigilant, sensitive involvement from every citizen. “Youth falling into addiction is not just a personal loss; it is a loss for the entire society,” he warned.

Shukla also pointed out that the state—renowned for its peace, culture and natural beauty—now faces a daunting challenge from synthetic drugs such as ‘chitta.’
