Madagascar's president has left the country after Gen Z protests: Officials

Madagascar’s president, Andry Rajoelina, has flown out of the country after a wave of protests that swept his capital, Antananarivo, last week. The demonstrations were driven mainly by Gen Z activists who called for fresh leadership and promised to keep the city on their watch.

Officials said Rajoelina left for Paris to regroup after the beloved 24‑hour sit‑in in the city’s square turned into a nationwide call‑out. “We’re taking steps to address the concerns raised by the people,” a state spokesman told reporters. He added that Rajoelina is “off‑site during this period” and that a senior government delegation will keep the capital’s businesses, schools and public services running safely.

The move follows a broader spike in youthful activism across the island. In addition to the audio‑republican chanted “No more delays, we want actual change”, the protests have put pressure on the next wave of reform, both political and economic. Most of the demonstrators want the country to move beyond the government’s slow‑moving reforms that many said had been stalled for years. The government has promised that it will listen to the concerns of the people.

The president’s departure marks a turning point for Madagascar’s presidential tenure amid high‑profile unrest. The officials say that the new meetings between leadership and youths are likely to shape the next chapter in these protests and the political trend toward an inclusive, new era.
