Tamil Nadu: TVK functionary hospitalised after alleged suicide attempt

Tamil Nadu – December 27 (IANS) – Ajitha Agnel, a senior member of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was moved to the ICU last Saturday after her health collapsed following an alleged suicide attempt earlier in the week, hospital officials confirmed.
Agnel, a long‑time worker from Thoothukudi, reportedly took around fifteen sleeping pills at her home on Friday and was rushed to a private hospital in the city. While the medical team initially stabilized her condition, it later began to deteriorate, prompting her transfer to intensive care.
Sources say that Agnel’s distress stemmed from being passed over for the post of “Thoothukudi Central district secretary” in a fresh organisational re‑haul announced by TVK chief Vijay on December 23. Frustrated over the appointment of Samuel Raj to the role, she publicly voiced her disappointment, arguing that she had been active in the party since its founding and questioning the qualifications of the new office‑bearer.
Following the announcement, Agnel and several of her supporters staged a protest at TVK headquarters in Panaiyur. They briefly halted Vijay’s vehicle, then sat in a dharna outside the office, drawing attention to lingering tensions among grassroots members.
The incident comes as TVK, founded by actor‑turned‑politician Vijay earlier this year, intensifies its push to become a formidable force ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The party has been working on building a robust organisational network across districts, but internal disagreements such as this are raising concerns about cohesion.
The episode also recalls last September’s tragedy at a TVK rally in Karur, where a stampede left 41 people dead and many more injured, subjecting the party to scrutiny over crowd management and internal coordination.
Hospital representatives confirmed that Agnel remains under close medical supervision. Her family said she first ingested sleeping pills at home after the incident and was promptly carried to the hospital, where her condition initially steadied before worsening on Saturday.
As Agnel continues treatment, the story is sparking broader discussions within political circles about internal democracy, cadre management, and the pressures faced by grassroots activists in rapidly expanding political movements.
