Kabul residents in District 6 are voicing frustration over constant power outages that leave them with just six hours of electricity each day. The blackouts disrupt everything from daily chores to work, pushing families to their limits amid Afghanistan’s ongoing energy crisis.
Take Latifi, a local resident, who shared his routine: “Sometimes at night, the electricity comes on at 9 PM until midnight, then it cuts off. It returns in the morning and goes again.” These unpredictable schedules make life even tougher.
Mohammad Saleh Sharifi, another neighbor, pointed out the skyrocketing costs. “When electricity is billed monthly, it becomes very expensive,” he said. “Previously, we paid 1,000 Afghanis for two months, but now it’s 1,200 Afghanis for just one month.” With Kabul’s electricity shortage worsening, bills are hitting wallets hard.
Many in the area rely heavily on power for basics like water pumps in apartment buildings. Asadullah, a Kabul resident, explained the ripple effects: “It creates a lot of challenges. In apartment blocks, water supply and other matters are 50 to 80 percent dependent on electricity.” The outages are fueling economic struggles and household headaches, with people calling on the Breshna company—the national power provider—to fix things fast.
Noorullah, a pharmacy student, feels the pinch during study time. “The weather is hot, and there’s no electricity,” he said. “I study in pharmacy school, and when it’s time for my lessons, there’s no power. We ask Breshna to increase the electricity supply time.”
Breshna’s spokesperson, Mohammad Sadiq Haqparast, acknowledged the gap. “Currently, we have between 350 to 400 megawatts of electricity in Kabul, while the actual need of the city is 650 to 700 megawatts,” he told reporters. Recent investments in power projects offer some hope, but it’s unclear if they’ll fully ease Kabul’s electricity woes anytime soon.
