JGU expands India-Japan academic ties with five new study programmes

O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) has announced five new Short‑Term Study Abroad Programmes for Summer 2026, giving students a chance to study at top Japanese universities from mid‑June to early July. The move is the biggest Japan‑focused internationalisation effort by any Indian university.

The programmes run from 15 June to 3 or 4 July 2026 and cover the University of Tokyo, Chuo University, University of Yamanashi, Kyorin University and Musashi University. Each one has a distinct theme:

  • University of TokyoJapan in a Globalised World
  • Chuo UniversityGlobal Japan: Understanding Law, Economics, and Society
  • University of YamanashiAI and Humanities: Applications in SDGs
  • Kyorin UniversityTradition Meets Tomorrow: Exploring Japan’s Heritage, Economy, and Society
  • Musashi University – theme to be announced

Students will experience rigorous courses, cultural immersion and research opportunities that highlight Japan’s blend of heritage and innovation.

Why this matters

Professor Dr. C. Raj Kumar, JGU’s Vice‑Chancellor, said the launch shows the university’s commitment to globalising Indian higher education. “Japan excels in innovation, governance, culture and sustainability,” he explained. “These programmes create long‑lasting academic ties between India and Japan and help our students become global citizens ready to tackle the world’s big challenges.”

India‑Japan relations have grown stronger over the past decade. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2014 visit set the tone for cooperation in education and culture. Subsequent visits by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in 2023 and Modi in 2025 further deepened ties, culminating in a joint vision for education and student exchanges.

JGU’s expanding footprint

JGU has built one of the largest Japan‑focused networks in India, with over 25 institutional partnerships that include the University of Tokyo, Chuo University, University of Yamanashi, Doshisha, Ritsumeikan, Osaka Gakuin and Hiroshima, among others. The university’s first Short‑Term Study Abroad Programme in 2025 took a cohort of 40 students to Temple University Japan, marking a historic peak in student mobility.

Professor Padmanabha Ramanujam, Dean of Academic Governance, noted that the new programmes maintain high academic standards while offering interdisciplinary exposure to technology, society, economy and culture. Vice‑Dean Dr. Akhil Bhardwaj added that the programmes fit into JGU’s long‑term vision for global mobility and cross‑cultural learning.

With this launch, JGU is setting a new benchmark for India‑Japan academic cooperation and giving its students a truly international summer in Japan.
