Sourav Ganguly set to replace brother Snehasish after filing nomination for CAB President

Sourav Ganguly, the legendary former India cricket captain, is set to take on a fresh role in cricket administration. He filed his nomination for the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) on Sunday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This move comes as his brother Snehasish Ganguly wraps up nearly three years in the position.

With no other contenders in the race, Ganguly looks all set to become the CAB president unopposed. The elections are scheduled for September 22. Talking to reporters, Ganguly sounded confident, saying, “It’s no challenge. I have eight years of experience—five as CAB President and three as BCCI President. So, I’ll try and do my best.”

Ganguly first led the CAB as president from 2015 to 2019. That year, he stepped up to become the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, a role he held until 2022 when Roger Binny took over. Earlier this year, the left-handed batting icon got reappointed as chair of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee, a position he also held in 2021.

In his latest coaching gig, Ganguly recently became head coach of the SA20 team Pretoria Capitals, replacing Jonathan Trott. Before that, he served as team advisor for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2019 and later as their Director of Cricket from 2023 to 2024.

Fans still remember Ganguly’s stellar playing career. In Tests, he played 113 matches for India, smashing 7,212 runs at an average of 42.17. He notched up 16 centuries and 35 half-centuries, with a highest score of 239. That makes him India’s seventh-highest Test run-scorer. His Test journey kicked off with a bang—a century against England at Lord’s in 1996.

As captain, Ganguly transformed Indian cricket. He led the team in 49 Tests, winning 21, losing 13, and drawing 15, for a solid 42.85% win rate. One of India’s most successful skippers, he earned the nickname “Dada” for his inspiring leadership.

In ODIs, Ganguly shone even brighter, featuring in 311 matches and scoring 11,363 runs at 41.02 average. He hit 22 centuries and 72 fifties in 300 innings, with a top score of 183, making him India’s third-highest ODI run-getter. He captained in 147 ODIs, securing 76 wins, 66 losses, and 5 no-results, with a 51.70% win percentage.

From the pitch to the boardroom, Sourav Ganguly continues to shape Indian cricket in exciting ways.
