A storm cloud is rolling over Tamil Nadu, and the India Meteorological Department says the wet spell will last until November 11.
On Wednesday, meteorologists in Chennai warned that many districts in central and western Tamil Nadu could see moderate to heavy rain. A long‑standing upper‑air cyclone over the state’s interior is pulling moist air from the Bay of Bengal, producing intermittent showers.
Heavy downpours are expected today in Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Kallakurichi, and Tiruvannamalai, as well as parts of Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Tirupattur. Local authorities advise residents to watch for thunder and lightning, especially on the hottest afternoons.
Tomorrow, the rain front will shift south, hitting Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Theni, and Dindigul. Fishermen and people living in low‑lying areas should prepare for possible floods or waterlogging.
In Chennai itself, clouds dominate the sky. Light to moderate drizzles may drop in the city’s outskirts, especially in the evenings and mornings, but a major rainfall alert has not yet been issued.
A lasting storm since early this morning prompted Tirupattur’s district collector, Siva Soundiravalli, to close all schools for Thursday—a precautionary move. Colleges in the area will remain open, but emergency crews have stepped up readiness, particularly in flood‑prone zones.
The meteorological department urges the public to keep an eye on weather news and avoid needless travel in zones forecasted for heavy rain. Stay safe, carry umbrellas, and keep emergency contacts handy.
