NCW takes cognizance of Jadavpur University student death case, seeks Kolkata Police report

NCW Demands Quick Probe into Jadavpur University Student Death
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has jumped into action over the tragic death of a 21-year-old student at Jadavpur University in Kolkata. They’ve sent a letter to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma, asking for a detailed action taken report within just three days. This comes after the NCW took suo motu cognizance—meaning they acted on their own—based on shocking media reports about the incident.
In a late-night social media update on Saturday, the NCW highlighted the disturbing case: "A 21-year-old third-year English department student was found dead in a lake inside the Jadavpur University campus." NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar urged for a thorough and impartial investigation, including a full forensic check and post-mortem details. They also want a deep dive into how university authorities handled campus safety. Plus, the commission is pushing for regular updates to the victim’s family and strict measures if any foul play turns up.
The heartbreaking event unfolded on September 11 evening. The student’s body was pulled from a water body on the Jadavpur University campus around 10 p.m. At the time, a cultural program by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI)—the student wing of CPI(M)—was going on nearby. Organizers stopped it right away once they heard the news. The body was rushed to K.P.C. Medical College and Hospital, but doctors declared her brought dead on arrival.
In response to the Jadavpur University student death, the campus has ramped up security big time. University officials issued a circular late Friday, banning outsiders from trespassing, morning or evening walks on campus, and any use of drugs or alcohol. Now, everyone—students included—must show valid ID cards to enter.
Early post-mortem findings point to drowning as the cause of death for the English Literature major. No injury marks showed up on her body, which is a relief but still raises questions. Police say they’re waiting on the viscera report to check for drugs, alcohol, or toxins that might have played a role. That could take a while, so the full story on this Kolkata student death isn’t clear yet.
This Jadavpur University tragedy has sparked calls for better campus safety across India, and the NCW’s push ensures no stone goes unturned. Stay tuned for updates as the investigation unfolds.
