Southern Railway Launches First Women’s Teams in Boxing, Weightlifting, and Table Tennis
Chennai, Sep 13: In a big boost for women’s sports, Southern Railway has kicked off its first-ever women’s teams in boxing, weightlifting, and table tennis. This exciting move aims to empower female athletes and give them the support they’ve long deserved.
For years, Southern Railway built a solid sports setup, especially for men. But talented women athletes in the region often faced tough times. They struggled to find stable jobs or proper training, forcing many to chase opportunities outside the south zone. Now, this new initiative changes that. It opens doors for women to compete at high levels while securing careers through sports recruitment in railways.
V. Devarajan, a former international boxer and sports officer at Southern Railway, shared his excitement. "I’ve boxed across India and seen other railway zones support women’s boxing for ages. Here in the south, chances were rare. This step finally lets our women athletes shine and grow," he said.
Women’s boxing started officially in India back in 2000, and many railway zones jumped on board right away. Southern Railway’s late entry still feels like a game-changer. It widens the playing field for female participation in competitive sports and could spark more interest nationwide.
Leading the charge is 19-year-old Tamanna from Haryana. She’s the first woman boxer to join Southern Railway in the 70-kg category. "I spotted the recruitment ad at 17 and couldn’t wait to turn 18 and apply. I’m thrilled to be the pioneer on this team. My goal? Win big at national and international levels," she said with fire in her eyes.
Officials confirm that recruitments for women’s weightlifting and table tennis teams are moving fast. Young athletes will soon join, building a strong squad.
Southern Railway wants this to do more than just create teams—it aims to nurture future champions and inspire girls everywhere to pick up a racket, lift weights, or step into the boxing ring. With growing focus on women in sports India, this could be the start of something huge.
