British film producer David Puttnam, the mastermind behind iconic movies like Chariots of Fire, The Killing Fields, and The Mission, is set to receive a huge honor at the upcoming Rome Film Festival. At 84, Puttnam will pick up the very first Industry Lifetime Achievement Award during the festival’s 20th edition, as reported by Variety.
This legendary figure has racked up an impressive haul of awards over his career—think 10 Oscars, 10 Golden Globes, 25 BAFTAs, nine Emmys, and even a Palme d’Or for The Mission. The award will be presented by Italian director Uberto Pasolini, known for films like Full Monty. Interestingly, Pasolini got his start working with Puttnam as a location scout on The Killing Fields.
Puttnam’s journey in Hollywood kicked off in London during the early 1970s. He teamed up with top directors like Alan Parker, Ken Russell, Adrian Lyne, and Ridley Scott to create some of the 1980s’ biggest hits—both critically loved and box-office smashes. In 1986, he took on the role of CEO at Columbia Pictures in the US, but stepped down after just 16 months. Returning to the UK, he kept producing standout indie films, including Meeting Venus (1991) starring Glenn Close, directed by Istvan Szabo.
Puttnam wrapped up his film production days in 1997 at age 56 and dove into politics. That same year, he joined Britain’s House of Lords and served until retiring in 2021. These days, he stays busy with education through his Atticus Education platform, offering audiovisual seminars around the world.
His influence goes way beyond the big screen. Puttnam has held key positions with the UK Film Distributors Association and the National Film and Television School. He’s also a UNICEF UK ambassador, a WWF global ambassador, and an associate professor at University College Cork.
The 20th Rome Film Festival runs from October 15 to 26, promising more exciting moments for film fans.
