On December 10, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, together with the World Health Organization, kicked off a month‑long campaign inside the Delhi Metro aimed at uplifting the health and well‑being of women and girls. The first stop was Sultanpur station, where information displays and announcements will run through December and January. They cover topics such as women’s safety, mental health support, digital inclusion, the Pre‑natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, and tuberculosis awareness.
“We launched this Delhi Metro campaign in partnership with WHO so that important messages reach the people of Delhi,” said Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava to LatestNewsX. “One key message is: agar swasth naari hai, to sashakt parivaar hai, sashakt rashtra hai — loosely translated as when a woman is healthy, the family and the nation can stay healthy.”
She added that the initiative will reinforce compliance with the PCPNDT Act and discourage gender‑based abortion, highlighting how modern technology is sometimes misused to determine the sex of a fetus. The Act was set up to fight female foeticide and address the nation’s declining sex ratio.
The campaign will also spotlight tuberculosis, building on the national TB Mukt Bharat effort. Since Delhi has high TB rates, the program will launch a “Jan Andolan” to combat this deadly disease across the state and beyond. According to the latest NIKshay portal data, Delhi recorded 98,309 TB cases between January and October 2025. The city has already screened nearly 878,000 people and performed about 380,000 chest X‑rays as part of the nationwide push.
“Using the Delhi Metro ensures that millions of daily commuters see these crucial messages,” Srivastava said, emphasizing how the reach will empower women and girls throughout the city.
Dr Catharina Boehme, WHO South‑East Asia’s Officer‑in‑Charge, echoed the sentiment: “Healthy women are the pillars of a healthy family, community, and a healthy nation.” She noted that the metro line “marks the final day of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence. As that campaign ends, another begins. We are proud to launch the Delhi Metro campaign for Women’s and Girls’ Health and Well‑being, rooted in two simple and enduring truths: Healthy Women = Healthy Nations, and #BecozSheMatters.”
The focus on women’s and girls’ health, including mental health, stresses that their well‑being is vital not only for them but for our society as a whole.
