Diane Keaton, the beloved Hollywood star who brought us the unforgettable Annie Hall and iconic roles in The Godfather series, passed away on Monday at the age of 79, PEOPLE reported. The actress’s family has asked for privacy during this difficult time, and no further details have been released.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said it arrived at Keaton’s San Francisco home early in the morning and transported her to a nearby hospital. The cause of death has not yet been announced.
Keaton was born Diane Hall in Los Angeles on August 5, 1946. She was the eldest of four children. Her father worked as a civil engineer, while her mother stayed home and encouraged Keaton’s artistic talents—music, singing, and piano. “She was beautiful, she was my advocate,” Keaton told PEOPLE in a rare interview.
She started acting in school plays, studied drama in college, and then moved to New York. There she adopted her mother’s maiden name—Keaton—when she entered the theater world.
Her first major break came with The Godfather (1972), playing Kay Adams opposite Al Pacino. She would reprise the role in The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III. In 1977, she earned an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall, a role that remains one of her most iconic.
Keaton’s career spanned decades, with beloved films such as The First Wives Club, Father of the Bride, Baby Boom, and Something Gotta Give, which earned her another Oscar nod. She frequently collaborated with directors Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola, and Nancy Meyers.
In addition to acting, Keaton directed projects like the 1987 documentary Heaven and the feature film Hanging Up (2000). In recent years she appeared in Book Club and its sequel, and even featured in Justin Bieber’s 2021 “Ghost” music video.
Keaton never married but was romantically linked to figures such as Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, and Woody Allen. She adopted two children—daughter Dexter (1996) and son Duke (2001)—who survive her.
Her death marks the end of an era for a generation that adored her wit, charm, and groundbreaking performances. The Hollywood community and fans around the world mourn the loss of this iconic actress.
