India to host 5th Coast Guard Global Summit in 2027

India has scored a big win by securing the rights to host the 5th Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS) in 2027. This decision came unanimously from participants at the ongoing global event, highlighting India’s rising influence in maritime security and international cooperation.

The exciting announcement happened during the 4th CGGS in Rome, Italy, on September 11-12. Leading the Indian team was Director General Paramesh Sivamani of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). With delegates from 115 countries and key international organizations joining in, the summit stands out as a top platform for worldwide Coast Guard collaboration.

At the handover ceremony for the CGGS Presidency, Director General Sivamani praised the forum’s role in tackling common maritime challenges like piracy, pollution, and search and rescue. He thanked the Italian Coast Guard for their great hosting and the Japan Coast Guard for managing the secretariat.

Looking ahead, India plans to host the 5th CGGS in Chennai in 2027, right alongside the Indian Coast Guard’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. The three-day event will feature an impressive International Coast Guard Fleet Review and a World Coast Guard Seminar. These activities aim to bring nations together, spark discussions on new maritime threats and opportunities, and build stronger ties.

“No single country can handle all maritime issues alone,” Sivamani stressed. He added that the Chennai summit will create an open space for better teamwork, trust, and joint efforts in global Coast Guard operations.

During the Rome summit, Sivamani also met with the Commandant of the Italian Coast Guard. Their talks focused on boosting India-Italy ties under the new Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029. Key areas include maritime search and rescue (M-SAR), marine pollution response, environmental protection, fighting cross-border sea crimes, sharing information, improving maritime domain awareness, and offering training and technical support.

This move underscores India’s commitment to leading in maritime security and fostering global partnerships.
