NHRC seeks report from Rajasthan over fatal freak bus mishap

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is stepping in after two serious accidents in India that raised grave safety concerns.

Rajasthan bus tragedy

On October 29, a private bus carrying more than 50 laborers carrying household items and gas cylinders was traveling on the Jaipur‑Delhi highway near Manoharpur village. While crossing an internal road, the roof of the overcrowded bus touched an 11 KV power cable. The contact triggered a fire that killed two workers and injured ten others.

The NHRC says the incident shows possible human‑rights violations. It has sent notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police in Rajasthan, requesting a detailed report within two weeks. The commission is demanding a full investigation into the safety of the workers and the condition of the highway.

Jammu‑Kashmir hospital lift accident

In a separate case, the NHRC acted on a news report that a 58‑year‑old woman died after a malfunctioning lift at a super‑speciality hospital in Jammu went wild. According to police, the elevator started moving upward at high speed when the woman stepped inside, causing severe injuries. It took about fifteen minutes to pull her out of the lift, and she spent five days in the ICU before succumbing.

The NHRC highlighted that the hospital’s negligence—no lift operator or security guard on site and no warning signs about the malfunction—likely contributed to the death. Like the Rajasthan case, the commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, demanding a thorough report within two weeks.

Both incidents underscore the need for stronger safety oversight and accountability in transportation and healthcare settings across India. The NHRC’s swift inquiries aim to protect citizens’ rights and prevent future tragedies.
