Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to kick off a major boost for Mizoram during his two-day Northeast visit. He’ll land in Aizawl on Saturday morning to launch and lay the foundation for development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore. This includes exciting rail, road, and education upgrades that promise to transform lives in the region.
Railway Connectivity Gets a Big Lift
A highlight of the visit is the inauguration of the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway project, a game-changer for Mizoram’s transport scene. This ambitious line, costing Rs 8,070 crore so far, features 45 tunnels and 55 major bridges—making it one of the toughest engineering feats in the Northeast.
Once operational, Aizawl becomes the fourth Northeast capital connected by rail, joining Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who reached Aizawl on Friday, highlighted how this project will reshape daily life for Mizoram’s people.
PM Modi, along with Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and central ministers, will flag off three new trains right after the launch. These include:
- Sairang-Anand Vihar (Delhi) Rajdhani Express: A weekly service linking Mizoram directly to the capital.
- Kolkata-Sairang-Kolkata Express: Running tri-weekly for easier access to eastern India.
- Guwahati-Sairang-Guwahati Express: Daily runs to boost local connectivity.
Northeast Frontier Railway’s CPRO Kapinjal Kishore Sharma says these trains will open up vital links to hospitals, universities, markets, and beyond. Expect more jobs, stronger economic ties, booming tourism, and better cultural exchanges across the Northeast.
A goods train will also start rolling from Sunday, ramping up freight movement. Vaishnaw noted that pre-2014, Northeast railway funding was just Rs 2,000 crore—now it’s five times higher under the Modi government, fueling projects like this.
Roads to Ease Traffic and Boost Farms
PM Modi will lay the foundation for key road projects to tackle congestion and support farmers. The star is the 45-km Aizawl Bypass Road, costing over Rs 500 crore under the PM-DevINE scheme. It aims to cut traffic in Aizawl, speed up travel to Lunglei, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Lengpui Airport, and Sairang Railway Station. Southern district folks could save up to 1.5 hours on trips to the capital.
Then, the Thenzawl-Sialsuk Road under NESIDS will help horticulture farmers, dragon fruit growers, paddy farmers, and ginger processors by linking better to the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei Highway.
In Serchhip district, the Khankawn-Rongura Road will open market access for local farmers and back a new ginger processing plant.
Don’t miss the Chhimtuipui River Bridge on the Lawngtlai-Siaha Road. This all-weather link will shave two hours off travel times and aid cross-border trade via the Kaladan Multimodal Transit project.
Sports, Energy, and Education Upgrades
For young talent, PM Modi will launch the Khelo India Multipurpose Indoor Hall at Tuikual. This modern arena will train Mizoram’s youth for national and international sports events.
On the energy front, a 30 TMTPA LPG Bottling Plant at Mualkhang in Aizawl will ensure reliable clean cooking fuel for Mizoram and nearby states, plus create local jobs.
Education takes a front seat too. The PM will inaugurate a Residential School at Kawrthah in Mamit district under PMJVK. It offers top-notch classrooms, hostels, and even an artificial football turf, benefiting over 10,000 kids and youth for lasting social growth.
Finally, the Eklavya Model Residential School at Tlangnuam will boost tribal education, cut dropouts, and provide holistic learning for the next generation.
These initiatives highlight the Modi government’s push for Northeast development, blending infrastructure with real benefits for everyday people. Stay tuned as Aizawl buzzes with these launches!
