‘India is proud of these champions’: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi meets blind women’s WC-winning team

New Delhi – On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Shaba, welcomed the Indian blind women’s cricket team – the champions of the first Blind Women’s Twenty‑20 World Cup – to his office at 10 Janpath. The victory came after the team secured a 7‑wicket win over Nepal in the decisive match in Sri Lanka.

In a Facebook post, Rahul expressed pride:
“Today, had the honour of hosting the Indian Blind Women’s Cricket Team, the proud winners of the inaugural T20 World Cup, in New Delhi. Their historic victory is a powerful message of courage and possibilities. Their grit, discipline, and extraordinary spirit are an inspiration for the entire nation. India is proud of these champions.”

The squad finished the tournament undefeated, establishing dominance throughout the competition. After taking the toss and batting, they limited the Nevlands to 114 for 5 in their 20 overs. The follow‑up chase proved textbook, with India reaching the target in 12.1 overs, leaving 47 balls to spare. Khula Sharir stood out, remaining unbeaten on 44 off 27 balls, while adding four fours to steer her side to a comfortable win.

India’s path to the trophy involved decisive victories: a 10‑wicket triumph over Sri Lanka, a win against Australia by 209 runs, a 85‑run win over Nepal, a ten‑wicket success against the United States, and an eight‑wicket victory over Pakistan during the group stage. The semi‑final saw India beat Australia by nine wickets, and the ultimate final resulted in a seven‑wicket win over Nepal.

Their commanding performance underscores the nation’s consistency in this emerging discipline, marking a significant milestone for blind cricket. The triumph is expected to boost both recognition and development of the sport in the years ahead.
