Football: Muller becomes Germany’s most decorated player with 35th title

Thomas Muller, the star striker for Vancouver Whitecaps, can’t stop smiling after grabbing his 35th career title—this one cements him as the most decorated player in German football history. His phone has been blowing up with calls from friends, old teammates, and family, all celebrating the 36-year-old’s big moment. He just edged out his former Bayern Munich buddy Toni Kroos, who has 34 titles, including their shared triumph in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The latest win came in the Canadian Championship final, where Whitecaps dominated Vancouver FC 4-2 to secure a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League. Muller made it even sweeter by scoring his 300th career goal with a cool penalty kick for the team’s second tally. Right after, he pulled out a fun surprise: a little cake topped with a shiny golden “300” to mark the milestone.

This all happened just weeks after Muller’s September 13 birthday. He shared a laugh about his parents visiting on matchday, joking, “I told them, it’s game time, not birthday party.”

Even with all these trophies, Muller brushes off the “title collector” label. “Comparisons don’t really add up,” he says. “Some players rack up more Champions League wins—like Kroos with his six to my two—while others grab extra national titles. I play for the thrill on the field, not the hardware. What matters is we showed we’re Canada’s top team.”

Stats and legacies? Not his focus. “I don’t chase records to build a resume,” Muller adds with a grin. “I’m in it for the pure joy of playing. Just call me a title hamster.”

Muller made waves this summer by leaving Bayern Munich after years there, joining Whitecaps as his first club outside Germany. Messages from his ex-teammates? Simple: “Enjoy it and score some goals.” And that’s exactly what he did.

Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen calls the feat “unique for one player.” With his contract running through 2026, Muller isn’t slowing down. “I’m all in to make every second count,” he promises. “And who knows? Maybe I’ll snag a bit more silverware along the way.”
