“The reason to make this film was that people should forget Wassepur”: Anurag Kashyap on ‘Nishaanchi’

Anurag Kashyap, the mastermind behind gritty hits like Gangs of Wasseypur, Ugly, and Raman Raghav 2.0, returns with his latest thriller, Nishaanchi. Fans can’t stop buzzing about the film’s trailer, and many are drawing parallels to the iconic Gangs of Wasseypur vibe. But Kashyap quickly sets the record straight: this isn’t a sequel or copycat—it’s a fresh story straight from North India.
Laughing off the comparisons, Kashyap told , “This is a North India film. It’s not Wasseypur. But you’ll get that same raw fun and edge that hooked everyone back then.” He made it clear that Nishaanchi aims to stand on its own. “We created this to let people move on from Wasseypur and dive into something new,” he added.
The movie stars Aaishvary Thackeray, grandson of Balasaheb Thackeray, in his big acting debut. He pulls off a double role as brothers Babloo and Dabloo, whose clashing views fuel the drama. Set in early 2000s Uttar Pradesh, the story explores family tensions and rivalries in a gritty northern India backdrop.
Kashyap first spotted Aaishvary’s talent in a school monologue from the film Shool on YouTube. “I watched it and thought, wow, this guy’s got something,” he shared. Initially, he cast him just for Babloo, testing his commitment. “I offered one role to see if he’d really grind. People talk big, but not everyone delivers. After six months of his hard work, right before shooting, I said, ‘You’re doing both brothers.'”
Produced by Jar Pictures’ Ajay Rai and Ranjan Singh, along with Flip Films, Nishaanchi features a screenplay co-written by Kashyap, Prasoon Mishra, and Ranjan Chandel.
