Visakhapatnam, Nov 4 – Civil aviation minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu announced that Bhogapuram International Airport, under construction near Vizianagaram, is 91.7 percent complete. The minister said the airport should open by June 2026 and will be dedicated to the nation.
During a site visit, Naidu inspected key facilities, including the main terminal, arrival‑and‑departure halls, and baggage‑handling systems. He also gave design feedback to make the airport reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Uttarandhra region. “We asked the GMR and L&T teams to speed up the remaining work with the highest priority and ensure world‑class standards,” he told reporters.
The minister highlighted the airport’s future role as a major economic hub for Uttarandhra. “When it opens, Bhogapuram will boost regional connectivity, trade and tourism,” he added.
Naidu was joined by MP Kalisetti Appala Naidu, MLA Lokam Madhavi, MLA Baggu Ramanamurthy, MarkFed Chairman Bangarraju, Vizianagaram district officials, and GMR and L&T representatives.
Earlier in September, the minister had said the government was working to give the new airport seamless road links from Visakhapatnam. Plans include connecting the port city to the airport through seven key points, with the road likely finished by April next year. The feasibility of an elevated expressway is also being studied.
The project is part of a broader vision shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to modernize India’s aviation infrastructure and stimulate growth in Andhra Pradesh.
