India-US Army Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2025 Wraps Up in Alaska with Stronger Ties
The latest edition of the India-US joint military exercise, Yudh Abhyas 2025, just ended after two intense weeks of training in the chilly Alaskan wilderness. This annual Army-to-Army drill highlights the deepening military partnership between India and the United States, boosting their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
Held from September 1 to 14 at Fort Wainwright and the Yukon Training Area, the exercise brought together 450 soldiers from each country. The Indian team, led by a battalion from the Madras Regiment, trained alongside troops from the US Army’s 11th Airborne Division. They dove into field drills, command post exercises, and sessions with experts to sharpen their operational teamwork.
This year’s Yudh Abhyas stood out as one of the biggest bilateral military exercises for the Indian Army, with a massive troop mobilization. Soldiers from both sides adapted to each other’s tactics under tough, real-combat-like conditions in sub-arctic terrain. It helped them build trust and familiarity for future joint operations.
The training kicked off with command post simulations, where Indian and American officers teamed up on planning, command, and coordination at brigade and battalion levels. Then came the hands-on action: field maneuvers, sniper and reconnaissance drills, counter-IED tactics, obstacle setup, and demolitions in harsh weather.
Live-fire exercises added excitement, featuring joint firing and mortar shoots that tested fire control, communication, and precision targeting. These sessions delivered key lessons in adaptability and teamwork amid challenging landscapes.
Yudh Abhyas has come a long way since starting in 2002 as a small platoon-level peacekeeping drill. Over the years, it has grown bigger and more complex, switching venues between India and the US. This evolution shows the steady rise in India-US military cooperation, paving the way for even stronger defense ties ahead.
