During the first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) accused the Mahagathbandhan alliance of deliberately cutting electricity at its polling booths to slow voting. The party said power outages were happening “intermittently” at strongholds where many of its supporters were voting.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) rejected the claim as “frivolous and misleading.” The chief electoral officer in Bihar confirmed that polling was proceeding smoothly and transparently at all 121 seats across 18 districts. “This allegation is completely baseless,” he said, adding that all standard protocols were being followed.
ECI officials monitored the election from control rooms and were keeping a close eye on the CCTV feed at every polling station—a first in Indian elections. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with the other Election Commissioners, maintained real‑time oversight to ensure there were no irregularities.
Voting opened at 7 a.m. in each constituency. A total of 1,314 candidates—1,192 men and 122 women—are contesting the first phase. The ECI’s swift response and the oversight measures aim to keep the process fair, transparent, and uninterrupted.
