In Chhattisgarh, the Waqf Board chairperson, Salim Raj, has urged the Muslim community to skip Garba events during Navratri. He explains that Garba is a form of worship for the Hindu goddess, which doesn’t fit with Islamic beliefs.
Speaking to reporters, Raj stressed that Navratri celebrates Maa Shakti, and Garba serves as a devotional ritual. “Muslims should keep their distance,” he said. “It’s not just dancing—it’s worship. People of faith respect that boundary, and joining in can lead to unnecessary conflicts.”
This comes amid similar calls in neighboring Madhya Pradesh. State minister Vishvas Sarang has made it clear that Garba belongs to Hindu traditions and Sanatan Dharma. He insists only Hindus should join these events and that attendees must show their identity.
“Why would non-Hindus go?” Sarang asked. “This isn’t some fun entertainment show. It’s a sacred prayer to Devi Maa.” He emphasized revealing identities to keep the focus on devotion.
Meanwhile, authorities in Bhopal are stepping up safety for Garba, Dandiya, and other festive cultural events. The district collector has ordered strict rules, including mandatory ID checks at entrances, CCTV cameras everywhere, and fire safety setups. No one gets in without proper verification, the order states.
