In Bangladesh, dengue fever has jumped sharply for the first time since the start of 2024. Health officials say that the last 24 hours saw 814 new cases, pushing the total for the year to 61,605 people who have tested positive. The Ministry of Health’s Directorate General of Health Services added that 253 people have now died from the virus.
October’s numbers look grim too. Since the end of September, 14,263 people have been infected. In September alone, 15,866 people fell ill, while 76 people died. In August, 39 deaths were reported. The rise in cases comes outside the usual monsoon window of June‑September, a trend that Xinhua news highlighted as a growing concern.
Dengue spreads when infected mosquitoes bite people. The disease is common in tropical and subtropical regions, including Bangladesh. Most infected people show no symptoms. When symptoms appear, they typically include high fever, headache, body aches, nausea and a rash. Most recover in one to two weeks, but some develop severe dengue that can require hospital treatment and may be fatal.
Because there’s no specific cure, doctors focus on pain relief and managing complications. Preventing mosquito bites—especially during daylight hours—and eliminating standing water can lower infection risk.
Globally, dengue cases have surged over the last decades. According to the World Health Organization, reported cases jumped from about 505,000 in 2000 to more than 14.6 million in 2024. The 2024 year set a record, with over 12,000 deaths worldwide and the Americas accounting for a large share of cases.
Bangladesh’s nurses, doctors, and public‑health teams are working to curb the spread. As the country moves into cooler months, communities are urged to stay vigilant against the bite of the disease‑carrying mosquito.
