Hero cop who killed Bondi Beach terrorist with ‘once-in-a-lifetime shot’ is ID’d
A local detective who keeps his neck polished with a tie has emerged as the man most people credit for ending the Bondi Beach terror attack. Official police sources say he fired a single, precise bullet that stopped a pair of gunmen from continuing their deadly spree.
The suspect was first seen on the Australian reality‑TV series Recruits, where he explained that he joined the force simply because he “hates crime.”
Senior Constable Cesar “Cess” Barraza was seen in footage moving into a tree‑shaded cover and, from about 130 feet away, taking aim at the two armed attackers. He was armed only with a handgun at the time. His shots are believed to have killed 50‑year‑old shooter Sajid Akram and seriously wounded his 24‑year‑old son, Naveed Akram, moments later.
Barraza began his policing career 16 years ago and the Recruits series documented his early days on the job. When asked why he chose a career in law enforcement, he answered simply, “Because I hate crime.” The clip has since become a rallying point for many who saw his quick reflexes save dozens of lives.
The police department has dubbed the strike a “once-in-a-lifetime shot,” according to the Daily Telegraph. Law‑enforcement insiders remark that even their top marksmen would have struggled to hit a target from that distance. One officer told reporters that the second, more decisive shot had left experts stunned— they still “can’t believe it.”
Ballistic analysis continues as investigators confirm whether Barraza’s bullets were the decisive blows. The two gunmen had killed 15 people during an antisemitic attack aimed at Jews celebrating Hanukkah on the renowned beach. Naveed Akram, the only surviving suspect, was charged Wednesday on 59 counts, including 15 murder charges and a charge of terrorism, after emerging from a coma admitted to a Sydney hospital.
Police confirmed that the vehicle the Akrams fled from at the scene contained improvised explosive devices and homemade ISIS flags. The incident has cast a spotlight on security at public events and on the crucial role that single, decisive actions can play in preventing further tragedy.
