A 69‑year‑old grandfather was killed in a tragic mishap that police have described as a “100% freak accident” at a McDonald’s drive‑through in Grand Island, Nebraska.
Michael “Mike” Dickinson was fatally injured after getting wedged between the drive‑through window and his car earlier this Tuesday morning. According to Grand Island Police Division Chief Dean Elliott, Dickinson apparently opened his vehicle’s door to reach further for payment, and before authorities could react he became trapped between the door frame and the counter. Elliott told local station KSNB‑TV that police were uncertain whether the vehicle moved or what caused him to become pinched.
A McDonald’s employee made a valiant attempt to free the grandfather by wading under the passenger side of the car, but the effort was unsuccessful. The employee was also injured in the incident and had to be transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to police statements.
Dickinson was rushed to an area hospital but could not be revived. The Grand Island Police Department released a statement confirming the fatal outcome. The department’s Accident Reconstruction Team is still reviewing the scene.
Dickinson’s family provided details about the man’s life. He lived in Grand Island his entire life, was married to his wife for 32 years, and the couple attended the same high school. In September 2021, he lost his right leg and was fitted with a prosthetic in December, after which he relearned how to walk. His daughters noted that he had a passion for helping others and that he was a dependable, practical mechanic—a skill that reflected his character.
The family memorialized him online, highlighting his love, loyalty, and kindness. They said he will be deeply missed and remembered for the impact he had on their lives.
