Sam Curran returns to England T20I squad; Ben Duckett handed rest

England Reacts with Key Team Changes Ahead of T20I Series Against South Africa and Ireland

England has announced major squad updates as they prepare for upcoming T20 International matches against South Africa and Ireland. All-rounder Sam Curran is making a comeback, while batsman Ben Duckett is taking a short break to regain his form.

Sam Curran, who hasn’t played for England in any format this year, returns to the squad after shining in domestic cricket. This summer, he played 24 games in the T20 Blast and The Hundred, scoring 603 runs with a high strike rate of 154.21, and taking 33 wickets. His strong performances earned him a spot in all six fixtures against South Africa and Ireland. Curran’s return boosts England’s bowling and batting options, especially after recent struggles with spin bowling during the second ODI at Lord’s.

Ben Duckett, who had a shaky performance recently, will take an extra week of rest before England’s winter tours of New Zealand and Australia. After scoring 462 runs in nine innings during the India Test series earlier this year, Duckett has struggled to find consistency in limited-overs cricket lately. In his last 10 innings—excluding a quiet Hundred campaign—he managed only one score over 20. This opens opportunities for players like Jamie Smith and Phil Salt to open the batting against South Africa, while Jacks or Tom Banton could fill in during the Ireland series.

Another change involves Matthew Potts, who has been withdrawn from the Ireland T20 matches to focus on County Championship games with Durham. With Jamie Overton retiring from red-ball cricket, Potts is seen as a strong candidate for England’s Ashes squad. The team management believes he benefits more from playing county cricket than traveling as a reserve in Dublin.

Jordan Cox, Curran’s teammate from Oval Invincibles, remains in the squad to face Ireland but will not play against South Africa. Meanwhile, Duckett will stay with the ODI squad for the upcoming match at Southampton.

Here are the squads for England’s T20I matches:

Vs South Africa:

  • Captain: Harry Brook
  • Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Brydon Carse, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Luke Wood

Vs Ireland:

  • Captain: Jacob Bethell
  • Rehan Ahmed, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Liam Dawson, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt (wicketkeeper), Luke Wood

England’s cricket team is making strategic changes to boost their chances before the winter tours. Fans will be eager to see how these new selections perform in the upcoming matches!
