Chennai and several districts of Tamil Nadu are under a heavy‑rain alert as a depression in the Bay of Bengal continues to bring strong showers and flooding. A warning from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai says that Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Tiruchirapalli could see very heavy rain in the next 24 hours.
The system sits off the Andhra Pradesh coast, pulling moist easterly winds into the delta. That mix of air and clouds fuels the pouring rain across the coastal zone.
More districts—including Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Salem and Dharmapuri—are also forecast to get heavy showers on Thursday. In Chennai the day started with clouds and light drizzle. An unexpected burst of heavy rain in the evening created deep waterlogging and traffic jams.
Key suburbs such as Guindy, Meenambakkam, Alwarpet, Nungambakkam and Koyambedu got sudden showers, slowing evening traffic as commuters headed home. Nearby areas like Alandur, Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram and Vandalur saw the GST Road flood, bringing traffic to a halt. In Perungalathur traffic stopped as cars struggled through water; Selaiyur’s stagnant rainwater also caused heavy trouble for motorists.
North and west of the capital, places like Poonamallee, Chembarambakkam, Cheneerkupam and Vellapanthavadi reported heavy rains, with knee‑deep water on many roads. At Vellapanthavadi Service Road, the water was so deep that more than 300 sandbags were placed to protect a lorry showroom.
In the delta region, Tiruvarur received a full hour of heavy rain and strong winds. Windy bursts hit Old Bus Stand, South Road, Vijaya Puram and Valavakkal. Farmers are worried, as fresh rain again submerged freshly drained paddy fields that had been treated after earlier showers.
The RMC urges residents in coastal and delta districts to stay cautious. Avoid waterlogged areas, as the depression may keep bringing moderate to heavy rain for Tamil Nadu and even Puducherry over the next few days.
