UK ex-Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, accused of antisemitism, mans the phones for Zohran Mamdani

Jeremy Corbyn, the former UK Labour Party leader, was on the phone this Sunday for Zohran Mamdani’s New York City mayoral campaign. The phone‑bank event was hosted by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in New York, and Corbyn posted a message on Facebook urging voters to help the outsider reach the finish line for an affordable city.

Corbyn left the Labour Party in 2020 after a government watchdog found that his office had mishandled antisemitism complaints. The report described the Labour Party’s response as “inexcusable” and violated equality laws. He denied the allegations, but the party suspended him and he is now an independent MP.

The campaign event sparked quick backlash. Party leaders and New York politicians questioned the propriety of a figure linked to antisemitism complaints lending his voice to Mamdani. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the day “a day of shame for the Labour Party.” Former New York governor Andrew Cuomo criticized the appearance, saying it highlighted a “politics of moral compromise.” He added that the city needs leaders who reject antisemitism in all its forms.

Mamdani, who won the Democratic primary earlier this year, faces accusations of antisemitism from many Jewish New York leaders. They worry his strong critique of Israel and the Gaza war could embolden hateful rhetoric if he is elected. Cuomo is currently the second‑favorite in the race, and he has been targeting Mamdani’s platform in recent days.
