Search continues for 2 missing from structure collapse at power plant in S. Korea

Seoul, Nov 8 – Search teams are still combing the wreckage of a collapsed boiler tower at a Ulsan thermal power plant. Two workers who went missing are still unaccounted for, while authorities race to clear the area so rescue can go faster.

The 60‑meter‑tall tower at Korea East‑West Power Co.’s Ulsan branch shut down in 2021 after 40 years of service. It was being torn down when it suddenly collapsed on Thursday, killing three workers and leaving two presumed dead. Yonhap News reports that the exact spot of the missing men is still unknown.

Firefighters and a crew of about 40 have been working through roughly 30 meters of twisted steel and debris to reach the site’s core. Drones and other gear have been used throughout the night to help navigate the wreckage.

In the wake of the collapse, the Disaster and Safety Response Headquarters decided to dismantle adjacent Unit 4 and Unit 6 power plants, which were already weakened by previous demolition plans. Early‑Friday night blasting began, and officials say the demolition of those units will likely occur around the start of next week, with the core wreck cleared by Tuesday.

A Ulsan city official told reporters that once the explosives are ready, the demolition will move forward quickly. “It’s a race against time,” the official said.

The accident happened while subcontractors were cutting steel supports to weaken the structure before blasting. The Ulsan District Prosecutors Office has set up an investigation team, working with police and the labor ministry, to find the cause, hold those responsible accountable, and support the families affected.

Key questions—such as whether the tower was properly braced with wires—will guide the inquiry. The investigation will determine whether safety protocols were followed and what steps can prevent a similar tragedy.
